As an extension of the North Berwyn Park District, West Suburban Special Recreation Association (WSSRA) offers our residents therapeutic recreation programs. Persons with disabilities, of all ages and ability levels are served by WSSRA. Summer programs are held weekdays, evenings and on Saturdays.
The North Berwyn Park District through West Suburban Special Recreation Association (WSSRA) offers therapeutic recreation programs for North Berwyn Park District residents of all ages with a disability, impairment or special education need. Programs are held in Berwyn and in neighboring communities. WSSRA programs are offered year round and include fitness, art, athletic, social, play groups and excursion programs. Special Olympic teams are available in swimming and basketball this fall. Participants gain skills, make friends, and have fun at all WSSRA programs! Parents of children with disabilities also find support at WSSRA. Therapeutic Recreation Specialists adapt activities that allow all participants to be successful. WSSRA programs are designed and supervised by Recreation Specialists who have educational backgrounds in disabilities. The WSSRA team helps participants be successful by adapting activities, providing close supervision, creating behavior plans, celebrating accomplishments and being knowledgeable about programming content.
"WSSRA support staff is the key in allowing our participants to feel successful. We offer a minimum participant to staff ratio of 4:1 at our athletic, excursion and social programs. One-to-one assistance is provided for individuals with multiple impairments and during swim lessons.
WSSRA provides great opportunities for children and adults with disabilities to enjoy the summer season. New participants are always welcome to join in the fun," Birko said.
