Winter Weather Safety Tips from the National Weather Service
In addition to offering shelter, the National Weather Service recommends the following safety tips for residents during winter weather:
Prepare Your Home Emergency Kit: Stock your emergency kit with essential items such as blankets, non-perishable food, water, first aid supplies, flashlights, and batteries. Be ready for potential winter storms.
Improve Traction on Walkways: Use sand, salt, or other materials to improve traction on icy surfaces. Apply ice-melting products to sidewalks and driveways to reduce slipping hazards.
Ensure Adequate Heating Fuel: Make sure you have enough heating fuel to last through periods of extreme cold, as regular fuel sources may be disrupted.
Emergency Heating: Keep an alternative source of heating or fuel available to maintain at least one room in your home at a livable temperature if the power goes out.
Fire Safety: Keep fire extinguishers on hand, and ensure all members of your household know how to use them properly.
Winterize Your Home: Insulate your walls, attic, doors, and windows to maximize heating efficiency. Consider installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic to prevent heat loss.
Avoid Overexertion: Be mindful not to overexert yourself or spend too much time outdoors in icy or snowy conditions, especially during extreme cold.
Additionally, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) offers further guidance on winter preparedness through its Winter Weather Preparedness Guide. It's important to stay informed and take necessary precautions during winter storms.
For those in need of shelter from the cold, the North Berwyn Park District Community Center remains open as a warming center.
Stay safe, stay warm, and don’t hesitate to visit if needed.
